All Things Must Pass

Thursday, August 11th, 2011

Dearest Guapo Friends, Fans, and Customers,

We have an important and difficult announcement to make. Guapo Comics and Coffee, in its current incarnation, will be closing at the end of August. Our second three year lease is wrapping up and Allie, Megan, and Jeremy have decided not to renew. It’s been a great six years, but all things must pass in the end. We are so thankful to the many customers and friends who have offered their financial and emotional support over the years. When we opened Guapo in a moment of whimsy, we never imagined we would be so warmly embraced by the neighborhood and Portland comics community. We’ve made so many friends and had so many great memories.

It’s a bittersweet change for us. As residents of Foster Powell, we are disappointed to lose the store. As co-owners who have been working six plus days a week for nearly six years, we’re looking forward to the change of pace. What’s next on our plates? Allie and Jeremy were recently blessed by the birth of their first child, their daughter Clementine. They plan to use their new free time to be better parents and to work on their creative pursuits. Guapo Comics will still exist in various incarnations–we will maintain our online Amazon store, we will continue to table at the Portland Zine Symposium, and intend to be as involved as possible in the Portland comics community.

The same great coffee lives on!  Megan has worked very hard to find the perfect person to take over the coffee shop who will have the same love and passion for it that she has had.  The new coffee slinger is planning several fantastic improvements and Megan will be personally training him to ensure that the quality and atmosphere we all love so much continues for years to come. What’s next for Megan?  That is still TBD but as a neighbor she will still frequent our wonderful coffee shop (only then it will be as a customer!) and hopefully stay connected with the friendly faces she has grown to know and love.

We’re sorry to have to give such short notice to our subscribers and loyal customers. All special orders and subscription requests will be carried through August 26. We will be hosting a closing sale and “Adios” party on Friday, August 26th. The party and sale will begin that Friday at 6PM. We sincerely hope you can make it, so we can celebrate one last time, say goodbye, and figure out how to keep in touch. The sale will continue through August 28th and possibly later.

With gratitude,

Jeremy, Allie, Megan
