Guapo Comics and Coffee is closing in its current incarnation. Megan, Allie, and Jeremy are hosting a goodbye party on Friday, 8-26-11, to celebrate the six wonderful years they were in business together and to say “Adios” to friends and customers. Guapo Coffee will continue under another owner. Guapo Comics will be closing for good and will be inaugurating their closing, blow-out sale at the party. The sale, with prices of 40 to 60 percent off nearly everything in store, will continue until closing on Sunday, 8-28-11. We hope you can make it to the party and sale!
Dearest Guapo Friends, Fans, and Customers,
We have an important and difficult announcement to make. Guapo Comics and Coffee, in its current incarnation, will be closing at the end of August. Our second three year lease is wrapping up and Allie, Megan, and Jeremy have decided not to renew. It’s been a great six years, but all things must pass in the end. We are so thankful to the many customers and friends who have offered their financial and emotional support over the years. When we opened Guapo in a moment of whimsy, we never imagined we would be so warmly embraced by the neighborhood and Portland comics community. We’ve made so many friends and had so many great memories.
It’s a bittersweet change for us. As residents of Foster Powell, we are disappointed to lose the store. As co-owners who have been working six plus days a week for nearly six years, we’re looking forward to the change of pace. What’s next on our plates? Allie and Jeremy were recently blessed by the birth of their first child, their daughter Clementine. They plan to use their new free time to be better parents and to work on their creative pursuits. Guapo Comics will still exist in various incarnations–we will maintain our online Amazon store, we will continue to table at the Portland Zine Symposium, and intend to be as involved as possible in the Portland comics community.
The same great coffee lives on! Megan has worked very hard to find the perfect person to take over the coffee shop who will have the same love and passion for it that she has had. The new coffee slinger is planning several fantastic improvements and Megan will be personally training him to ensure that the quality and atmosphere we all love so much continues for years to come. What’s next for Megan? That is still TBD but as a neighbor she will still frequent our wonderful coffee shop (only then it will be as a customer!) and hopefully stay connected with the friendly faces she has grown to know and love.
We’re sorry to have to give such short notice to our subscribers and loyal customers. All special orders and subscription requests will be carried through August 26. We will be hosting a closing sale and “Adios” party on Friday, August 26th. The party and sale will begin that Friday at 6PM. We sincerely hope you can make it, so we can celebrate one last time, say goodbye, and figure out how to keep in touch. The sale will continue through August 28th and possibly later.

We’re having a book release party this weekend from 5PM to 8PM on Saturday, 6-11-11, celebrating Portlander Katy Ellis O’Brien’s “Creature Colors.” Katy will be in store promoting the book and helping to lead the all ages coloring party. This is an all ages event, so please bring your kids. There will be snacks, crayons, and sample pages for people to color. There will also be a contest and prize tied into the coloring.
It’s almost time again for everyone’s favorite day of the year–Free Comic Book Day! As always, Guapo will be participating and as always it’s on the first Saturday of May. May 7 from 10Am to 6Pm we will be handing out Free Comics! We will have the crazy new art comic “Dan Quayle” published by our friends at Sparkplug, Teenage Dinosaur, and Gazeta. It features local cartoonists and is a tribute to Willamette Week cartoonist John Callahan. We will have the all-ages dragon comic put out by our friends at Tugboat Press, which features a terrifc cast of artists including locals Aron Nels Steinke and Andrice Arp. And we’ll have all the Marvel, DC, Darkhorse comics as well.
It’s already that time of year again–time for the Stumpwtown Comics Fest where we get to party, see so many of our friends, and table at the show. For the SIXTH year in a row we are hosting our tie-in party. It’s on April 15th at 8pm and features a reading, an art show, and the Maisie Kukoc Award for Comics Inspiration. There will be food and drinks. Here’s the poster:
We have an awesome new art show debuting at Guapo tomorrow night. It features all Portland, and all female cartoonists and and illustrators and is just called “Woman” in honor or Women’s History Month in March. The party starts at 7pm. Some drinks and snacks will be available. Here’s the flier:
This month we’re celebrating the new book by friend and Guapo logo creator, Aron Nels Steinke. Super Crazy Cat Dance is the full color hardcover kids book expansion of Aron’s self published black and white mini comic. Original art pages from the book will be gracing our walls throughout September.
On Sunday, 9-19-10, at 6pm we will be having a reading and book release party for Aron’s book and for Yes, Let’s, the beautiful new kids book published by locals Tugboat Press. Tugboat publisher Greg will be reading from/presenting the book.
There will of course be drinks and snacks.
